The last couple of weeks I’ve been in an interesting situation...
By accident or whatever, I wound up working on a new account while we were slow on the main account I usually service. This is fine, I’m asked to help with no guidance and I sit down and figure things out... this is what I do, time after time after time.
So, I start to do this and my boss decides he should ‘get other people involved’ but the thing is there are people who don’t want to sit down and figure things out, they just want you to hand them something and give them a very specific task to do and no more. My boss always seems to be coming over to me and asking me what work I can pass off to others which I don’t especially like doing. One reason is that the people he’s passing off the work to, usually do a substandard job. There, I’ve said it.
The other reason is that I’m not seeing that work come back to me (or my peer on the account) when we’re slow. Now, whatever problems I may have with the guy I work with, he’s good. It’s one of the reasons two years ago I point blank grabbed the Director and told him to put the guy on the account. He’s a huge pain in the ass (I’m a pain in the ass too) but I would just as soon move to another account than the primary. The account director is an asshole, it finally caught up to her a few months ago and now she’s out at the client and less trying to pass of blame on studio staff.
It’s as if they finally realized they’re not getting their monies worth.
This is another one from the drafts queue that I’m working feverishly to clear out since there are over 200 drafts in there. It addresses a few things simultaneously as in getting me to focus, doing some true housecleaning of the blog and pushing out regular content.
While I recognize that a lot of the blog is dreck, just me carping about one thing or another, I also see that it achieved what I wanted it to achieve when I set out and started it. It got me writing and by writing regularly, my writing did get better. Enough and to the point that others recognize it and often pay me compliments on my writing which is flattering to say the least.
I still haven’t gotten around to finishing anything on the several writing projects I’ve had floating around for years but those projects are like marathons and before you run a marathon you need to train. I may be at the point where that training is at an end and it’s time just to do the actual running of the thing.
This is something that’s just another reminder of how dysfunctional work can be and as I said I’ve been in the process of removing myself from work as a focus for my life. I no longer want to orbit around work because again I simply don’t get paid enough.
I’m off at the moment for two glorious weeks. I had wanted to really take a trip but Covid put the kibosh on that.
I’ve been much happier in general since I pulled back but I will say it has made others really, really uncomfortable. I’ve left them with a vacuum and that absence to them is unsettling. I’m doing my work, still performing my tasks as always with the same level of care that I have in the past. I’m just shutting the fuck up now which is better for me. The great thing is watching how off balance they are while I’m doing it.
